In one of my previous postings I have criticised the new Indian Army chief for his supportive comment on Burmese Military Junta. However according to Mizzima news, based in India reported India’s people support to our National Cause as follows.

Over 250,000 people in India’s northeastern state of Meghalaya during the second peoples’ parliament called on the central government to support the Burmese democracy movement and actively intervene in the Junta’s crackdown on protestors.

Robert Kharshiing, Member of Parliament and organizer of the peoples’ parliament held in Mawphlang in Meghalaya on Saturday, said the participants during the ‘democratic resolution’ condemn the Burmese junta for its brutal crackdown on monks and peaceful protestors.

“We call on India to actively intervene into the Burmese crisis and use its influence to pressure the ruling junta for democratic talks with detained Burmese leader Madame Daw Aung San Suu Kyi,” Kharshiing told Mizzima.

Kharshiing, who is also the convener of the Indian Parliamentarians Forum for Democracy in Burma (IPFDB), said the people urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the cabinet to change its policy on Burma and take a more pro-active role by intervening on the ongoing crackdowns on dissidents by the junta.

The meeting attended by six Indian Parliamentarians including prominent Member of Parliament of Nirmala Deshpandey, joins activists across the world in marking a global day of action on Burma calling on the international community to act on the ongoing crackdowns in Burma.

In Guwahati, another northeast Indian town, several members of the press, academics and intellectual held a Candle Light Vigil in solidarity to the monks and peaceful protestors, who are recently killed by the junta.

In New Delhi, over 100 Burmese activists including Indian supporters earlier today held a protest rally calling on India as well as the United Nations to do more by pressuring the Burmese junta to immediately kick-start democratization process.”

We always remember how Indian Leader Nehru, treated very well to Aung San, father of Aung San SU Kyi, as a young nationalist  fighting Idependance of Burma from British. Even Nehru provided a winter coat to Aung San on the way to England, as a very concerning fatherly figure, during our first Independence Struggle.

We are hopeful again, for India’s politicians and public to surpport our second Independence struggle from the Military Junta.

  1. You have my support, as of many Indians who admire Daw Suu Kyi and the struggle of the Burmese people. I just hope my country’s government also wakes up to the injustices perpetrated by the junta and supports the aspirations of the Burmese people!
